The brief

A tired courtyard of brick sheds needed to become a cluster of small studios without losing the character of the yard that gave it a name.

Our approach

We kept the brick shells and the cobbled yard, stripped back later additions, and inserted a lightweight steel mezzanine so each unit could gain a second level without new foundations.

The result

A set of day-lit studios around a shared yard that still reads as the working place it used to be.

Scope

  • Structural survey and selective demolition
  • Steel mezzanine insertion
  • Roof repair and rooflights
  • Shared yard resurfacing

Constraints

  • Retained brick walls of variable condition
  • Narrow vehicle access to the yard
  • Neighbouring occupied units
